A Lasting Gift

P. I. Boy and Jean Murdoch

A gifted athlete who lettered in men’s basketball at UNH, Pierre “P.I.” Boy ’39 was a lifetime Wildcat fan. Well after his own UNH career, he was a fixture at a range of sporting events, and he served for many years on the selection committee for the UNH Athletics Hall of Fame—a body to which he was himself inducted in 1990. When he died last September at the age 97, Boy left a gift to UNH that will ensure that his love of UNH Athletics lives on: a $30,000 bequest directed to the Wildcat Athletics Council Endowed Scholarship Fund. Boy’s gift will help support future generations of Wildcats with superior athletic ability, high academic achievement, and financial need.

Boy’s connection to his alma mater ran exceptionally deep. A colonel who served in the U.S. Army for 30 years after he graduated from UNH, his final assignment was as professor of military science in the UNH ROTC program. He stayed in Durham after his retirement, working for several years as the University’s director of alumni affairs, and ultimately earning both the Alumni Meritorious Service Award and the Profile of Service Award.

Boy’s children are happy—and entirely unsurprised—that their father chose to remember UNH in his will.

“UNH, and UNH Athletics in particular, meant so much to my father,” says Jean Boy Murdoch, the third of Boy’s five children. “He was thrilled when some of us attended, and would have been so pleased to know that his youngest grandchild hopes to transfer to UNH in another year. Nothing would make him happier than knowing he could continue to support the University’s student-athletes even after his life.”

A charitable bequest is one of the many ways of making an enduring gift to UNH Athletics. You can include UNH in your will by designating either a portion of your estate or a specific amount of cash, securities, or property. Because they do not come into effect until after you pass away, bequest gifts are particularly flexible, and can be changed and modified during your lifetime.
